Here are the steps that will teach you how to turn on another computer remotely. Be sure to follow these steps if you want to be successful in your endeavor.
Plug in your computer into the power source and set the power switch to the On position. Make sure that your computer is connected to the Internet. Do not use a wireless connection.
Jot down your computer's MAC address and IP address.
Start your computer and press DEL to take you to the BIOS settings. Some computers make use of the Function keys to enter BIOS settings.
In the BIOS setting, go to the Advance tab and look for Network Activity. Under this, you should be able to find Wake on LAN. Enable it and then save the changes you have made to the setting by pressing F10.
Restart the computer and let it boot normally.
Make sure that the computer is connected to a router and it should be forwarded to the port that will be used to turn on the computer remotely. Note down the Port number.
Follow the same procedure from Step 1 to Step 5 for the computer that you will be using to turn on the computer.
Check the Internet for a Wake on LAN tool. Once you find it, download, and install it on the computer that you will be using for turning on. If you like, you even visit an online website that has the ability to run WOL protocol.
Run the Wake on LAN tool and enter your computer's IP address, MAC address and the Port number of the router that is being used by WOL.
Click button that states Wake Computer. This will turn on another computer remotely.
Getting MAC Address and IP Address
Now that you have learned how to switch on another computer remotely, here are steps to teach you how to get a computer's MAC address and IP address.
For MAC Address
In the System tray, double click the Network icon. This will open a new window.
In the window go to the Support tab and click Details. This will give you the details of the computer and will show you a string of letters and numbers under the heading of Physical address, which is nothing but the MAC address of the computer.
Jot down the MAC, or Physical address, and keep it aside, as you will need it when you want to know how to switch on another computer remotely.
For IP Address
Click the Start button and then select Run.
When you enter the command prompt, type in 'ipconfig'. This will give you the IP address of the computer.
Jot it down and keep it handy and it is needed when you want to learn how to start another computer remotely.
